Google is not a Pirate

A thread over a Threadwatch.org mentioned how Google actually suggested that someone bid on the keywords "bootleg movie download." Sepcifically, the thread framed it in terms of "Google's lack of respect toward copyright." I doubt that it has anything to do with that, however. Rather, Google has a pretty good idea what movie downloaders are "googling," so it kind of makes good business sense from the perspective of an online advertiser to suggest keywords to a potential client and offer the credit necessary to buy them. If those keywords are what your users are searching for, that is not Google's fault. After all, fact #4 about Google is that they trade in information--not copyrights--and that sounds like an invaluable piece of information for someone who is in the business of providing movie downloads.

As far as Hollywood goes, moreover, I'd like to take yet another opportunity to welcome them to the internet. If they don't find a way to start offering their content for almost nothing and compete with the likes of sites like YouTube which will, no doubt, offer full-length features sooner or later, then they'll probably go the way of the print publishing industry. In 2006, the Economic Policy Institue reported that "publishing (non-internet) has lost 91,000 jobs, in part due to internet competition."
