Google & WIkipedia Traffic

It seems that it's pretty confounding that Wikipedia is in dire financial straights. According to HitWise, traffic to Wikipedia from Google is up 166%. As Search Engine Land observes:

  • 70% of Wikipedia's upstream visits came from search engines
  • 50% of the search engine visits came from Google
  • The percentage of Google's downstream traffic going to Wikipedia increased by 166% year over year
  • Last week Wikipedia was the #3 website in Google's downstream
  • When you read about traffic like this, it's absolutely baffling that anyone can run themselves broke on it. After all, it seems that no matter what term you search, the Wikipedia entry appear on the first page of results, and often in the top five.
