Making Money with Video

Since we're such huge fans of video, a recent change in the roster of one of the blogs we read really caught our eye. Just yesterday, Mark at zzMarketing announced that he was leaving the company to pursue his own, er, pursuits.

Long story short, Mark has inaugurated his new (personal) blog with a extremely lengthy (i.e. detailed) post on how to make money with online video. He's broken it down into 8 simple, yet broad steps, and we'd just like to take a minute to summarize these steps, and throw in our own two sense.

Step #1: Monetization Strategy: Here Mark maintains the importance of Google AdSense. Not everyone, however, will find it a profitable affiliate program, so you might want to consider your other options. Nevertheless, do put at lease one AdSense ad on your site if only to get the bots indexing your site on a regular basis. This is a simple SEO trick.

Step #2: Setting up the website with Wordpress: There are a variety of advantages to using a blog to promote your content. Aside from allowign your users to engage your content in an optimal way, the way a blog works is great for SEO purposes.

Step #3: Choosing a domain name: Here Mark tells us to not dwell on keyword sensitive domain names, he does remind you to make the short, snappy and memorable. This is very sound advice. Although there are those that have managed to violate that rule as well, they are the exception rather than the rule. In short, good keyword domains are nearly impossible to find, so short, snappy, and easy to spell are definitely your first considerations.

Step #4: Plugins Galore: Now Mark provides a pretty kick-butt list of Wordpress plugins that just about any blogger would be interested in seeing. However, the first one, Viper Video Quick Tags is not completely necessary. If you're willing to compose most of your blog entries in HTML rather than in rich text, simple deactivate the rich text editor in your user profile, and you'll be able to paste the embed code directly into your text editor without needing a plugin for the video to work.

Step #5: Get Feedburnt: Although Wordpress is RSS ready, feedburner offers the advantage of subscription stats. This way, you have an idea of how many people are following your work in an RSS reader.

Step #6: Theme Design: The beautiful thing about Wordpress is that anyone can modify the themes with a bit of CSS knowledge. In other words, if you find a theme with a layout you like, but not a color scheme, well a $15-20 investment in a basic CSS book will have you changing fonts and colors in no time. Really, this is how I learned CSS. Mark provides a preliminary link to a theme page on the Wordpress site, but keep in mind there are hundreds of other themes out there, and the vast majority of them are free. Mark also suggests that you:

  1. Add a few categories
  2. Use custom permalinks! (this will really enhance your SEO)
  3. Change page titles.

Under this step, Mark also covers features such as:
  • Adsense Placement & Optimisation
  • Beating Adsense Smart Pricing
  • Google Coop
  • Get Feedburner on there
  • Step #7: Sourcing and adding video content to your website: Here, Mark goes over two different approaches. The quick and profitable way isn't recommended for newbies, and the longer but more profitable way which involves some grey hat video editting.

Step #8: Kick Starting Promotion: Finally, Mark briefly touches on some viral marketing tactics that, to be honest, have entire blogs dedicated to them in and of themselves. Specifically, he cover exploiting StumbleUpon, Digg, and the like.

All in all, Mark provides some sound advice on how to generate revenue from a video blog, but he does seem to overlook one important thing: a real video blog is about original content. Mind you, we're not all Loren Feldman, so we don't all have what it takes to make a living off of our own unique creations. Nonetheless, if you're making a living off of other people's work, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't take a shot at featuring yourself from time to time. After all, if you spend so much time monitoring the world of online video, it won't be long before you'll be in a position to provide commentary, insight, or how-to knowledge on the latest trend out there.

And speaking of how-to videos about, um, making video, here's an older one for the road.
