Blog Review: Social Media Systems

Foreword
This is a critique of one of my preferred blogs. If your blog ends up here, it's because I already enjoy it immensely. But no one is perfect, so I'm offering what I believe is constructive criticism. I can only hope that you return the favor. I'm actually reviewing the Social Media Systems Blog because of something they posted. It made me think that more people should know about it. Here's a little video intro.

Profile
This blog is part and parcel of a larger organization that preaches and practices leveraging social media to outrank your competitors. They believe that SEO is outdated, so they've turned to using Social Media Marketing as a replacement. Consequently, the blog about social media in its various facets and ranking in the major search engines today.

Strengths
Perusing the Social Media Systems Blog, the first strength that comes to mind is its informative nature. Many blogs tend to get caught up in posting random news bits for the sake of posting daily, puff pieces for the sake of being part of the conversation, and esoteric rants that only insiders and long-standing readers can read. The majority of the Social Media Systems Blog posts seem to aimed at giving the readers actual tools or knowledge they can apply in an online business setting.

An additional strong point of theirs also has to do with content: posts tend to be long. In other words, the majority of posts are much more like articles than blog posts, and sometimes it can be nice (not to mention useful) to read something that actually has some structure, and isn't just regurgitated stream of consciousness.

Weaknesses
The first shortcoming that I notice over at the Social Media Systems Blog is the frequency of posts. They tend to not be published at a steady rate. This isn't to say, of course, that they don't post enough. Indeed, they do post considerable amount of material, but then nothing for several days at a time. Since they do tend to publish more posts than there are days in the weeks, however, this problem could be easily resolved by simply setting some posts to be published at a later date.

The other weakness has to do with aesthetics. Simply put, the site tends to be loud. Although the motif definitely lends itself to the business side of the side, the blog seems to suffer by it. There is simply too much going on one page, and it is almost as though that information is being shouted at you. Specifically, the blog page itself feature a two column layout of summarized posts that makes it considerably difficult to digest. This one that's probably best left to your RSS feed -- but I imagine that many of their potential clients would not have adapted yet.

What I Want More Of
Personally, I find the content of Social Media Systems Blog agreeable. There isn't so much blathering about Digg or Reddit. They tend to stick to the user-generated-content side of social media and SEO -- even if I don't agree with them all of the time. ;)

There is, however, a lot more to user-generated-content than just text. In a word, I'd like to see more multi-media. After all, video is a huge part of what Social Media Systems endeavors to accomplish. After all, just as universal search has simplified reputation management, it has also made video search integral to it -- and I think that Loren Feldman would agree with me here.
