Blog Review: Twist Image Blog
Foreword
This is a critique of one of my
preferred blogs. If your blog ends up here, it's because I already
enjoy it immensely. But no one is perfect, so I'm offering what I
believe is constructive criticism. I can only hope that you return the
favor.

Profile
The Twist Image Blog is by no means a PPC Affiliate Marketing blog. Rather, it tackles online marketing writ large, and has a lot more to do with emerging trends in social media and branding than it does with how-to do this or that. Mind you, Mitch knows what he's talking about. his career started in online publishing in 1994, evolved into marketing, and his company was included in Seth Godin's directory/e-book identifying the top 500 creative/marketing firms in the world. In a word, Mitch knows what he's talking about.
Strengths
Without a doubt, Mitch's blog has more strengths than weaknesses, so it is difficult to pinpoint or enumerate them all. Off the bat, though, Mitch is adept at identifying emerging trends, and putting them into a light and/or context that most people don't see coming until they are already old news. In this way, digesting Mitch's thoughts on a regular basis will definitely enrich your perspective on marketing.
An additional strong point of the Twist Image Blog is Mitch's podcast Six Pixels of Separation. Mitch definitely has a kind of talk radio flare that most podcasters lack. More importantly, however, he really makes an effort to integrate the conversation into every podcast. There's an audio comment line that really enables the audience to become part of the program. It's really the 2.0 of podcasting.
Finally, and this might seem like a moot point, but it isn't: Mitch links back to everything he can. He doesn't so much as drop a name or product without finding the most relevant landing page for the accompanying link. This might not seem like a big deal, but as far as helping newbies feel their way around unfamiliar phenomenon, this approach to linking is truly educational -- not to mention good Karma on a link-love level.
Weaknesses
Two things come to mind when I think about what the Twist Image Blog might lack. The first is color. It has a very minimalist design and layout, and in a way that is very soothing and help keep the reader focused instead of distracting them with pomp. But it would be nice if there were some more images (logos, product shots, charts) to accompany so much of the insight that Mitch puts out there.
The second weakness has to do with comments. Comments tend to be held for moderation. I recall reading that they are now live, but I just left a comment, and it is still the case. Apparently, it has something to do with preventing malicious comments, but I never realized that such comments could be such a problem on a marketing blog. I think it's a weakness that Mitch, someone who champions the conversation to such a degree, holds the comments of repeat commentors for moderations.
What I Want More Of
Well, aside from more color/images and open comments, there are two things that I would like to see more of on the Twist Image Blog. The first is, well, something that I haven't seen anything of, so I guess that I'd just like to see it period. It is vlogging. Mitch is just such a natural at podcasting, and such a talented speaker (he does plenty of conferences and the like), that I think 1-2 minute editorials by the man would be extremely intriguing in video.
The other thing I'd like to see more of is commentary and coverage on the world of search engine marketing. Now, I'm not just trying to coax Mitch into applying his talents to analyzing the industry I work in. Mitch actually has some hands on experience in the industry, so I'm surprised and disappointed that I don't see more coverage of it on the Twist Image Blog. He used to work for Mamma.com, so it would be really neat to hear what Mitch thinks about the evolution of vertical and local search, never mind all of Google's various marketing campaigns and product bundles.

Comments
Thanks for this review Chris.
In the redesign of the Blog/Podcast (coming soon, I swear!!) we address almost all of these concerns.
I still moderate comments - not for content - they ALL go live - but because of the insane amount of spam.
I hope you (and others) understand :)

Mitch,
My pleasure... You know, the second that I got the e-mail notifying me that you commented, I thought "Oh s**t, our comments aren't even live." :) But that's the great thing about doing these reviews: having to face your own shortcomings. After all, the best way to learn is form our mistakes.
Anyway, I feel your pain about the spam. We actually tried pre-approving certain users (such as yourself, of course), but the function just didn't work.
This is why we're migrating to Wordpress soon. It's practically spam proof. We're just waiting for the latest version to come out of beta, and we'll relaunch our own blog.
In any case, I'd tell you to keep up the great blogging, but I know that you will whether I tell you to or not...
