Digg-ing SEO

When it comes to online marketing, SEO communities are always abuzz about Digg.Just recently, Michael Gray was looking to connect with other Digg exploiters and Pronet Advertising was reminding everyone about the Digg API contest. Well here's my two sense on the hype...

It's good to see someone so passionate about something.

I promote stories all the time on Digg, I even use it to promote my own stuff and my clients.

It's actually quite easy, especially when the content is good. I think it's selfish not to share good stuff with the Digg community ;)

To say SEO's should not use Digg as a way to communicate to people is a bit reactionary. I live in a country which espouses a market economy, the market will decide and Diggers decide if a story gets to the front page.

What other groups do you want to ban from Digg?

I don't want to ban anyone from Digg, and I never said that I did. I just find that when SEOers use it for personal gain, they disregard the spirit of the -- and that's abusing it.

As for your comment about living in a country which espouses a market economy and that the market will decide and Diggers decide if a story gets to the front page, I have three beefs with it.

First of all, if you've read any my pieces on personalized search, you'd know that I'm a huge advocate of letting the market decide many outcomes.

Secondly, many registered user of Digg use it only to promote their personal gain. Being a user is, therefore, not teleologically tantamount to being a Digger. So your point there is flawed. I guess, then, that this is another example o how the market is open to abuse, and can't always be relied upon to address the forces of demand.

Finally, bringing up how your country espouses free market values is both a red herring argument and bullsh**t. Where do you think I live? Venezuela or Cuba? I live in Canada. We have this thing called NAFTA over here, bub. Guess what the "FT" stand for.

Anyway, I think the fact that you put words in my mouth and tried to turn this into a debate on the ethics of market democracy speaks a lot louder than your actual word. What's the matter, Lyndon, feeling a little defensive? Did I strike a nerve? How come you're taking it so personally when I explain why Digger dislike SEOer (a known trend)?
