Recruitng 2.0: Viral Video in the Job Market
You might have noticed over the course of the last few weeks that we've posted some video job ads. First we advertised for a Senior Developer, and then we posted about our desire for a Russian speaking Marketing Rep. This, admittedly, seemed like some strange behavior for a PPC Affiliate Marketing company.
Well, these weren't just rash, desperate attempts to shore up the efforts of an exhausted HR department. No, there was a method to our madness, and we're finally ready to reveal just what that method is.
You see, short after Geek Dinner Montreal, I got a call from Ben Yoskovitz about an exciting project he's working on. It's called StandOutJobs and it's a job classifieds site where all the posting are in video. Of course, this isn't a new concept in and of itself, but Ben's specific vision is.
The way Ben sees it, the biggest problem that companies have in recruiting suitable candidates doesn't stem from a lack of skilled and qualified applicants. No, what the problem is, rather, is that it's a lot more challenging to match personalities with corporate cultures. Much like it's a huge pain in the tuckus to find you soul mate, it can be equally difficult to find someone who (1) has the skill set you need, and more importantly (2) fit in with the way that your company does things.
If anything, the internet has complicated the process. Now job seekers are able to fire off dozens of applications a day, and do so at whoever posts a job ad on Craigslist, Workopolis, Monster, and the like. Consequently, recruiters end up with hundreds of resumes to sift through. And anyone who has ever had to experience this first hand knows that even after you eliminate the unqualified, you still have dozens of prospects, and no way to tell which might be a good enough fit to be a worth taking the time out to schedule an interview.
Long story short, StandOutJobs is all about giving companies a chance to showcase their culture. This way, candidates know what they're shooting for well before they pull the trigger click the "send" button. Whether or not this discourages job-hungry, click-happy, desperate job-seekers remains to be seen. But what is fairly certain is that the creme de la creme who are fussier about what they spend their time and energy on will be able to find the kind of environment they're looking for, and that's something that appeals to us.
In any case, I've posted out videos below. If you compare them to the other video on StandOutJobs, you'll notice that they have a much different feel, and that's because here, at SearchAnyway, we tend to approach PPC Affiliate Marketing from a slightly different angle than most, and we're looking for open-minded candidates who can appreciate that.
In the first video, we advertise for a Senior Developer, but couldn't say much about projects because they're all in their final stages and pretty top secret. Consequently, we said that, and tried to let the fun-loving nature of the video speak for how excited we all are.
The second vidoe is for an Russian Speaking Marketing Rep. Because we were planning a Russian language video, we recycled bits from the first video. So, of course, the third video is that Russian language video, and I shot it with a distinct retro feel, and used some techniques that went beyond the usual filters you find in bundled video editing software.
