Why Ghost Blogging is Unethical

Post Script: I realized that in this video I may have unfairly represented Mitch Joel's view on ghost blogging, and for that I am sorry. Mitch DOES NOT in any way endorse the practice of ghost blogging. In fact, he is very much against it. See his comment below.

The other day, Mitch Joel brought up ghost blogging. He later clarified that he does not endorse the practice, but perceives a double standard at work when it comes to judging it so negatively. Well let me try to clear up that double standard for you Mitch...

Hey Chris,

If you go back and look at my first post: http://www.twistimage.com/blog/archives/000963.html. I clearly state: "I’m not saying that I think it’s fine for companies to Ghost Blog (I don’t), but then it should be equally unacceptable to make-up quotes for a press release or write their speech as well."

I don't like Ghost Blogging at all. It was clear from my first post. I was questioning the PR community who seem to take issue with Ghost Blogging while at the same time they'll make up quotes or write speeches for CEOs simply because society accepts it. Which, I think, creates a double standard.

If you follow my two posts, you'll see some great comments and additional insights.

I just wanted to clarify that I never said it was good, OK or acceptable. It's not.

Mitch,
I perfectly understand your concern. I even stated at the beginning of the post that you do not endorse the practice.

But looking over the video, I see how I might have unfairly represented your position. That is my bad, entirely. So I'll tell you what, I'll change the emboldened "does not" in the post above to uppercase, throw an editor's note in at the top, and get a follow-up video in as soon as I can.
