Women in Blogging

So bloggers are always hyping that they're going to SOBCon or what they did at the last SES. And, of course, blogging is all about the juice and link love, so why not? But let's face it, not all online marketing events are geared so much toward making the world a better place than they are toward, well, personal gain through networking and the like. Well, the BlogHer conference is shaking that dynamic up. As the press release reads:

Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) April 30, 2007 -- BlogHer LLC, the Web's number-one guide to women bloggers, today announced that registration is officially open for BlogHer Conference '07: A World of Difference. This event offers bloggers and those interested in blogging a rare opportunity to engage, network with, and benefit from the collective wisdom of the BlogHer community.

BlogHer conferences feature an interactive format designed to inspire conversation, and connections. "In 2007, we continue our tradition of hosting a conference that this diverse community has built," says Elisa Camahort, BlogHer Co-founder and President, Events & Marketing. "BlogHer '07 is a hands-on learning and networking opportunity, designed to help new and experienced bloggers leverage technology to follow their passions and gain additional exposure for their blogs and expertise."

Events like this are important because, well, Tucker Max and Maddox are the only ones getting book deals out of their blogging. In fact, several women bloggers are also getting book deals on the pretense of their distinct identity as women bloggers. Courtney Martin and Jessica Valenti are just two examples that come to mind, and they both come from just one blog. Even more to the point, however, incidents such as that which recently happened to Kathy Sierra make it even more pressing that gender equality is chapioned on the net writ large, and the blogsphere in particular.

I am so looking forward to SOBCon. Thanks for mentioning it. Are there any guys going to BlogHer?

You know, I'm not sure, but the impression I get is "no." I didn't really dig into it because (1) I was pretty busy, but more importantly (2) I don't think that I'd be comfortable going. And if that makes me think of anything it is not that BlogHer should be reaching out to male bloggers (because I don't think that they should, particularly), but that it must be truly challenging for a woman to try and operate on a professional level in a field, industry, or even a room that is dominated by men, and to my understanding, I think that the blogsphere counts.
