How To Market via Social Networks
When I recently wrote on how to market on Facebook, something I tried to emphasize that, as a rule, the marketing potential of any social network isn't so much the advertising reach as it is the branding potential. After all, social networks are a place for people to interact with one another. The best way to engage those users in any given online community, then, is on a human level.
It's by developing a relationship with other community members that you can truly market your brand. Bit by bit, users begin to associate a certain "personality" with your brand name. As a result, your brand becomes more than the front a faceless corporation. It becomes the umbrella under which real people with real feelings come together, and users have an easier time trusting other unpredictable people than they do trusting pre-programmed big machines. And when you take your brand to the marketplace, trust is something that you just can't put a price-tag on.
Here's a little video from the folks over at Common Craft that I picked up via dMiracle. It's all about how social networking works. It's short, sweet, and if you take the time to watch it, you'll notice just how much it emphasizes the organic, human element of online interaction through social networks.
