Big Buzz Around Little Things

logo_hdr3.gifI keep noticing these things and I find it really amusing how online companies turn every little thing they do into an event that requires publicity. Moreover, they do changes and updates just to get a chance to announce them.

I received an e-mail from my favorite hosting provider Go Daddy with the following title "Exclusive NEW Feature for Go Daddy Hosting Customers!"

In the letter they announce that they have updated their hosting accounts with a free, new feature allowing their customers to access Google Webmaster Tools directly from the Hosting Control Panel. They add that Go Daddy is the first hosting company to offer this exciting new feature to its customers.

Those of you who bought domain names or hosting plans from Go Daddy surely noticed how hard they try selling extra options and features. The way these features are described makes them look very important, which encourages inexperienced users purchase them.

Let's go back to the accessing Webmaster tools from the hosting panel. Is this feature really exciting and useful? Is it really important to access this service from the hosting panel? The hosting panel as well as the entire interface of Go Daddy web site is terribly overloaded with all kinds of information, most of which is advertisement of various services and special deals they offer.

So what is my point here? I find this type of marketing funny, but at the same time I find it smart and efficient.

At least they are not charging for it! This is a good example of why one should avoid these kind of host providers... One one that gets me the most is when I see offers for thousands of email accounts...Who needs that many?
