The Trap of Blogging

blog_trap.jpgThe community of web entrepreneurs keeps growing. Beginners actively test different ways of making online money easily, but sooner or later most of them decide to build their own content-oriented resources.
Due to Google's search algorithm providing priority to original content and because of the severe online competition in every thematic niche imaginable, content-oriented sites have became one of the most trusted ways of establishing an online presence with long-term monetizing potential.

Defensio - NewSpam Killer Goes Public

If you're an affiliate marketer, a blog can be a powerful tool. On the one hand, you can use a blog as your primary affiliate portal. On the other hand, you can install a blog on a sub-page of your already existing affiliate marketing portal and use it to generate contextual traffic. Furthermore, the blogging basics for affiliate marketers are not exactly rocket science.

Blogging Basic for Affiliate Marketers

Here on the SearchAnyway blog, lately, we've been talking a lot about using blogs for affiliate marketing purposes. After all, blogs are great for building contextual traffic. So even if you don't want to build and affiliate marketing blog, you can always install one somewhere on one of your other affiliate marketing portals, and use it to publish content that pertains to whatever affiliate marketing niche it is that you specialize in.

The Two Sides of Blogging Advice

So if you want to use a blog as an affiliate marketing tool, once you actually build an affiliate marketing blog, you have to worry about building blog traffic. Now, there's a lot of blogging advice out ther (such as on BloggingTips.com), but a lot of it only tells you half the story. Advice pieces either tell you what to do (as with my own 6 steps to blogging), or not to do (like these 15 blogging mistakes). But there are two sides to every story. That is, there's always an inverse to what you should or shouldn't do, and it is often helpful if both sides of the story are laid out for you. Well, this post on the Dos and Don'ts of Blogging does just that. Here is the gist of the 5 two-sided coins:

An Affiliate Program that Doesn't Pay Out

There's a new widget being offered by a company called Blogrush that is supposed to help bloggers attract targeted traffice to their site. However, it's looking a lot like an affiliate program that never pay out. In fact, it might not be much more than the MyBlogLog and BlogCatalog widgets that bloggers have been using for some time. I didn't want to be talking out my butt when I started writing abotu Blogrush, so I actually installed the widget on my personal blog yesterday. So far, all it's done for me is slow down my page loading time.

How to Build Blog Traffic

It's becoming more and more common for affiliate marketers to use blogs for attracting traffic. After all, blogs are trendy, great for SEO, and there all already ample examples of highly successful affiliate bloggers. Well, here's a video interview with Cory Doctorow from BoingBoing.net that I came across on an affiliate marketing blog of all places. Cory offers advice on how to build and manage a blog that's not just successful, but sustainable. Three principles that Cory covers are:
  1. When you see the headline, you should know what the blog post is about.
  2. The first sentence should tell you everything you need to know to decide whether you want to skip the article.
  3. Don't tell people that their preferred way fo reading is your preferred way of earnign money so they should stop.

Blogging as a Human Resource

As blogging becomes more and more of a marketing and public relations tool, it might be something that you want to incorporate into your human resources strategy. Specifically, you might want to both train current employees in how to blog and seek candidates that understand blogging when you're hiring. By having several staff members contributing to the company blog on a regular basis, your organic search engine ranking can be boosted considerably because multiple contributors:
  1. makes it more likely that your content will show not just in Google, but in Google News.
  2. means that updating that blog frequently becomes easier, and search engine love frequently updated content.

Wordpress Talks, Money Walks

So there's this movement within the Wordpress community to get rid of sponsored links/themes. It's being spearheaded by the likes of Matt Mullenweg (founding developer of Wordpress) and Mark Ghosh. Some affiliate marketers, however, think that they're just sucking up to Google. As plausible and credible as the skeptics may be, I still agree with Lorelle's stance (abridged @ Marketing Pilgrim). Allow me to explain...

Embedding Video in WordPress Without a Plugin

If you're using Wordpress to blog, you might have wanted to embed videos in your posts, but have found that you'll have to first download and install a plugin to do so. Now this causes a number of problems. First, it's a pain in the but. Second, you have find a plugin that's reliable and trustworty. Finally, the next time you update Wordpress, you might have to update the plugin as well, and there's guarantee that an update for the video plugin that you chose will be available in a timely manner.

Blogging Makes You Smarter

Mitch Joel over at Twist Image has this theory about how being online has made us smarter consumers. Well, it looks like Web 2.0 is making us smarter users as well, and Wordpress is doing their part to further that trend. They recently released Ella, Wordpress Version 2.1 which is named for Jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald. The changes, for the most part, were pretty cool, even if they did cause some of us a headache--don't worry Vlad, I felt your pain. What was most interesting, however, is how the back-end user interface is now configured.

How to Blog Market: The Ping-Release

There is little doubt that a blog can be a great marketing and PR tool.
