5 SEO Non-Worries

Everyone likes to throw around SEO advice because, well, it entices reader to (1) come back and (2) link back to your site. To borrow from Mark Twain, however: the difference between an SEO advice and SEO expertise is the difference between the lightning-bug and the lightning. Well, in this week's Small is Beautiful column over at Search Engine Land, columnist Stoney deGeyter takes a look at the first 5 of 10 common SEO concerns that really aren't worth the stress of of fretting over. In the first installment of his two-part series 10 Useless SEO Worries, Stoney explains:

How to Build Blog Traffic

It's becoming more and more common for affiliate marketers to use blogs for attracting traffic. After all, blogs are trendy, great for SEO, and there all already ample examples of highly successful affiliate bloggers. Well, here's a video interview with Cory Doctorow from BoingBoing.net that I came across on an affiliate marketing blog of all places. Cory offers advice on how to build and manage a blog that's not just successful, but sustainable. Three principles that Cory covers are:
  1. When you see the headline, you should know what the blog post is about.
  2. The first sentence should tell you everything you need to know to decide whether you want to skip the article.
  3. Don't tell people that their preferred way fo reading is your preferred way of earnign money so they should stop.

Blogging as a Human Resource

As blogging becomes more and more of a marketing and public relations tool, it might be something that you want to incorporate into your human resources strategy. Specifically, you might want to both train current employees in how to blog and seek candidates that understand blogging when you're hiring. By having several staff members contributing to the company blog on a regular basis, your organic search engine ranking can be boosted considerably because multiple contributors:
  1. makes it more likely that your content will show not just in Google, but in Google News.
  2. means that updating that blog frequently becomes easier, and search engine love frequently updated content.

The buzz around universal search is growing, and with good cause: it's both simplifying reputation management and changing SEO as we know it. The thing about things that change the status quo is that they tend to represent the future. If universal search is part and parcel of the future of SEO, then, you should probably be thinking about how you're going to prepare for it. Now, the difference between knowing what to do and knowing how to do it is the difference between reporting the news and making the news.Well, universal search has simplified SEO writ large much in the same way that it has reputation management. Here are four steps tolaying the foundation for your universal SEO.

5 Ways to Pitch Social Media

Anyone who has ever had to sell a client or boss on the adopting social media in one form or another is likely well aware of the kind of skepticism that they can encounter. Regardless of your sales tools (visual aids, statistic, etc...), the largest obstacle any social media advocate will face is misunderstand or a complete lack thereof. Of course, the moment you contradict someone's initial impressions , you make your pitch twice as difficult. They'll get stubborn and dig in their heel. You can't, however, take this personally: that is human nature, and you've probably been guilty of just such reflexive stubbornness on countless occasions.

3 SEO Essentials

There are a number of SEO benefits of blogging. They range from structured content to frequently updated content. Part and parcel of blog content, however, is linking, and that means that you are able to generate a slew of internal links with precisely the kind of anchor text you want the corresponding pages to rank for. If you're still doubtful, watch the video below and note how Rand Fishkin of SEOmoz emphasizes the three following SEO points:
  • Power of Internal Link Juice
  • Power of Trusted Domains
  • Power of Internal Anchor Text
  • Granted, Rand is talkign about wiki-jacking, but first and third point are both available to you through blogging alone. Besides, a few of the SEO benefits of blogging are linkbaiting, link building, and link exchanging. This means that even if you don't manage to become an authority site yourself, the long-tail of blogging makes it all that much more likely that you'll get linked by one sooner or later.

How Google Maps Can Effect SEO, Local Search, and Reputation Management

It looks like Google is going to make using Google Maps as easy embedding a YouTube video. Granted, the API is already open, but now any Joe-blogger and his dog is going to be able to do it. There's a likelihood, moreover, that this is going to somewhat effect the worlds of both SEO and reputation management. On the one hand, webmasters and bloggers that place the maps on their page might gain some SEO out of the deal. On the other hand, especially given the proliferation of local search and the advent of universal search, businesses that share any address that an embedded map is being generated by might be interested in the content on the page on which that map is being featured.

How to Make Money with Video

There's no question that video is a rapidly growing online medium. Just yesterday, Listasaurus.com announced it was integrating video into its PPC affiliate classified ads. The day before that, an affiliate marketer named Mark wrote a script that can help you create an affiliate marketing mini-site that included video. And then on Tuesday, I forecasted that video would be drive online advertising moreso than VSS predicted. The lesson of all this: New media is multi media. As an affiliate marketer, then, if you're looking for ways to reach out to your visitors, create a dynamic experience, establish a trust economy, or just stand out from the thousands of other affiliate marketing sites out there, you might want to consider how you might be able to use video to do so. To that effect, I offer you the 3 laws of vlogging and some tips on how to vlog properly. If higher production quality video is your fancy, however, there was my viral video case study that took a look at how successful and unsuccessful differed from one another. Just bear in mind, however, that the future of online video is one where the videos themselves contribute to the quality of the user's experience. On a lighter note, however, you can just enjoy this video support group for vloggers from vlogger extraordinaire, Loren Feldman.

    Facebook's Trust Economy

I argued that marketing via Facebook (or any other social network) is a question of branding and/or reputation management -- and has nothing to do with conversions. Basically, it offers companies the opportunity to create communities for themselves. This is what's known as building a trust economy. The idea is that users/consumers tend to have an earnest desire to belong somewhere. Whenever they do belong to a community, they tend to trust other community members more easily than would complete stranger that they have nothing in commmon with. By building communities around their brand names, then, marketers can establish a bond of trust between themselves and the consumer/user. And that converts better than any single click ever will.

    Directories, SEOs, and Seven Blunders

One of the things that's all too prevalent with the advent of Web 2.0 is that a lot of webmasters have abandoned a lot of the ol' fashioned online promotions techniques. Case in point: the SEO benefits of blogging have quickly eclipsed submitting directories in the SEO popularity contest. Granted, Web 2.0 is drastically changing the way that information is disseminated on the web, but web pages are still web pages. What this means is that Web 2.0 has created a slew of new opportunities to promote and market your site, but that doesn't mean that the older opportunities have been pushed out.

How To Market via Social Networks

It's by developing a relationship with other community members that you can truly market your brand. Bit by bit, users begin to associate a certain "personality" with your brand name. As a result, your brand becomes more than the front a faceless corporation. It becomes the umbrella under which real people with real feelings come together, and users have an easier time trusting other unpredictable people than they do trusting pre-programmed big machines. And when you take your brand to the marketplace, trust is something that you just can't put a price-tag on.

    How to Market on Facebook

Well, whether or not the social network is worth its salt, only time will tell. What is both certain and au courant, however, is that when you're a new media darling, you also tend to be a new marketer's dream. Nevertheless, Muhammad over at Pronet Advertising isn't convinced. After all, his reasons all focus mostly on advertising considerations, and he misses the branding potential of the social network altogether. Briefly summarized, his reasons for Facebook's marketing shortcomings are:

SEM, PPC, and the Cannes Film Festival

Today is day 1 of 10 at the Cannes Films Festival, and since I'm all into video/vlogging, I thought I'd take a look into how I might be able to conduct and case study of the festival's online marketing strategy. Well, I didn't have to go very far beyond a preliminary Google search to notice that the producers and directors of films being showcased at the Cannes have all seemed to have foregone the the opportunity to ride the buzz around the festival to promote their own work on the internet. Basically, instead of getting lost in the Cannes crowd, they could be using some pretty basic search engine marketing to raise the profile of their respective work. By bidding on certain keywords that users will be searching for and bloggers will be publishing, film makers could make sure that their films show up in the sponsored search results and in the PPC ads on Google's publishers network.

    User Generated Marketing

The reason that a viral marketing 2.0 campaign can be so powerful is because of its democratic character. If the content of the campaign appeals to users, the next thing you know, they are doing much of your marketing for you. In other words, viral marketing 2.0 is about user generated distribution. You provide a solid brand experience, and your target market proliferates it for you.

Long story short, Mark has inaugurated his new (personal) blog with a extremely lengthy (i.e. detailed) post on how to make money with online video. He's broken it down into 8 simple, yet broad steps, and we'd just like to take a minute to summarize these steps, and throw in our own two sense.

Embedding Video in WordPress Without a Plugin

If you're using Wordpress to blog, you might have wanted to embed videos in your posts, but have found that you'll have to first download and install a plugin to do so. Now this causes a number of problems. First, it's a pain in the but. Second, you have find a plugin that's reliable and trustworty. Finally, the next time you update Wordpress, you might have to update the plugin as well, and there's guarantee that an update for the video plugin that you chose will be available in a timely manner.

The Future of E-Mail Marketing: Grim

Today, Jordan over at Marketing Pilgrim discusses how to get e-mail marketing right. I have a little bit of a different take on it -- on that involves trust economies. You're free to disagree with me, of course.

    4 Essential Blogging Guidelines

Have you ever wondered just how to sum up just what blogging is all about? Well, David Armano over at Logic + Emotion has pretty much done that in a post called The Four C's of Blogging. Granted, the post isn't anything new, but Dawud over at Healthy Web Design dug it up for us. In any case, the 4 Cs are as follows:

    User Generated Spam

Well, it looks like spamming user generated video sites is a sign that online video is here to stay. Even though the main industry players aren't concerned about it, however, their reasons are somewhat flawed. In other words, there are ways to benefit from spamming video sites even though spammers can't make money from users viewing their videos yet.

    What V-Blogging is Good For

So it turns out that Tamar Weinberg didn't like one of my videos. If Tamar's right, the future of YouTube is grim, but it isn't, so I think that Tamar's wrong. So I've made yet another video to address Tamar's concerns. It's a quick not on what video-blogging is good for.

    Use Blogs to Increase Traffic

If you are running a content-based website, adding a blog is an excellent way to build traffic. Of course, to enjoy these blogging benefits, your blog should be updated daily (or at least five days a week), but if you practice and preach that Content is King, then you should have no trouble adding a blog to your daily diet of webmastering. Essentially, a properly run blog has a number of features that can be exploited for the purposes of viral marketing, social networking, and building defensible traffic.

    Domain Marketing

Anyone who has ever gone domain name hunting knows how difficult it can be to get your hands on a domain that describes your service or company. Squatters have been sitting on the best ones for a long time now. However, having a descriptive URL can be a powerful (and sometimes integral) part of your marketing strategy. For example, both YouTube.com and MySpace.com give you a pretty good idea of what to expect from each of the sites.

    Forums vs Blogs

The wonderful thing about blogging is that it enables you to have somewhat of a dialogue with your target market or the marketplace writ large. They are a social kind of media in that respect. A great precursor to them, however, was the forum/message-board. But what exactly, then, is the difference?

    Social Media, Branding, and SERPs

There's no shortage of buzz these days around using social media to manage both your brand name and public image. It appears, however, that social media has a use beyond influencing what it is said about you and how people respond to that discussion. Essentially, third party social media sites can be an invaluable tool in influencing the content of search engine results pages.
