UK Search Marketing Explained

neutralize-logo.gifWhether you're into e-commerce or search arbitrage the holidays often represent a perfect opportunity to launch a PPC advertising campaign. After all, more users are searching more services than any other time of years. Of course, the flip side of that coin is (1) keywords are that much more competitive, so (2) the risks associated with poor PPC campaign management are at their highest. Indeed, this is why it's essential to both plan well in advance and employ seasonal ad copy. If you're new to PPC, then, you face the tough choice of whether to gamble on either foregoing a potentially lucrative opportunity or squandering your online ad budget on inexperience. For first time advertisers looking to target UK audiences, however, the folks over at Neutralize (an SEM agency) have released a free 64 page report on the current state of the UK search marketing landscape.

5+5 PPC Mistakes = 10

Just yesterday I lamented the link bait potential of top 10 lists. Well, today, I'm borrowing from two other SEMers to compile my own list of 10 PPC mistakes. Both Jennifer Laycock at Search Engine Guide and Amber at PPC Hero recently touched upon 5 PPC mistakes that they believe were both common but easily avoided. So I've summed them up for you here.

Choosing a Second-Tier Search Engine: Affiliate Networks and Vertical Traffic

There's considerable debate over whether second and third tier search engines are worth you advertising dollars. Some point to user experience and quality assurance concerns. However, there is also the argument that most of the traffic being taken by these search engines is referred through affiliate sites, so if the second-tier search engine has a high quality affiliate network (i.e. no spammers and polices click fraud), then it might be a good place to invest your PPC advertising dollars.

7 Ways to Cheat an Affiliate Marketing Program

When it comes to cheating in the world of PPC, the most readily available example that comes to mind is click fraud. While some advertisers are click frauded by competitors trying to exhaust their advertising budget, others are cheated out of clicks by dishonest affiliates that are trying to inflate their own revenues. In this way, the interests of the advertisers and affiliates are both in sync and at odds with each other: while they're both trying to turn users into traffic for the advertiser, what counts as a conversion for the respective parties isn't always compatible.

PPC and Growing Pains

There's little doubt that the PPC advertising industries is facing challenges. Most of these, however, can be chalked up to an evolving online space, which means that PPC is simply undergoing some growing pains. Essentially, the fact of the matter remains that PPC advertising is a gateway to online advertising because it is both an easy and affordable way to reach online consumers -- especially to new advertisers. As new SEM products such as local search mature, then, PPC will likely resume its place on the throne of online advertising. Nevertheless, it is still very fashionable to signal the death rattle of PPC. Because there is so much anxiety among affiliate marketers, advertisers, and adservers that have depended on it for so long, producing such negative buzz makes for good linkbait. Most recently, a WebProNews article is citing five variables that will PPC:

One great way to increase conversion rates on your PPC advertising campaigns is to decrease the number of invalid clicks by pre qualifying clickers with you ad copy. Rather than trying to beat them, however, the Yellow Pages is joining forces with the largest of search players: Google. The result promises to be a considerably rise in the PPC market.

How AdSense for Search Screws You

If you've been monetizing your traffic with Google AdSense for search, then you've been getting middle-manned on your own product. Think about it: you're providing the search data, but Google is getting rich off of it and only giving you some chump change. Now granted, for many webmasters, Google Adsense is their bread and butter. It's brand-name advertising that (1) gets their site indexed often, and (2) their users perceive as more credible. For others, however, AdSense is the bane of their existence. Since payments are only issued quarterly, AdSense is an unreliable source of income because webmasters can be banned or refused payment without any warning or appeal process.

SEM, PPC, and the Cannes Film Festival

Today is day 1 of 10 at the Cannes Films Festival, and since I'm all into video/vlogging, I thought I'd take a look into how I might be able to conduct and case study of the festival's online marketing strategy. Well, I didn't have to go very far beyond a preliminary Google search to notice that the producers and directors of films being showcased at the Cannes have all seemed to have foregone the the opportunity to ride the buzz around the festival to promote their own work on the internet. Basically, instead of getting lost in the Cannes crowd, they could be using some pretty basic search engine marketing to raise the profile of their respective work. By bidding on certain keywords that users will be searching for and bloggers will be publishing, film makers could make sure that their films show up in the sponsored search results and in the PPC ads on Google's publishers network.

Detecting Click Fraud

Undoubtedly, one of the biggest problems with click fraud is getting accurate estimates of just how pervasive it is. While Yahoo and Google cite 12-15% and 10% on their respective networks, the rest of us are left to speculate that it's actually somewhere between 0.2-14.2%. For any PPC advertiser, then, trust the adserver click fraud estimates seems irresponsible. Of course, that means that the option left for PPC advertisers is to police their click through rate themselves.

Click Fraud: Yahoo Catching Google

Today, Yahoo made an announcement that caught the attention of online marketers for two reasons. One of the reasons that it caught people's attention was some the information that was released along with it. Basically, Yahoo quoted higher clickfraud numbers than Google has. Search Arbitrage is Ethical

In the world of business, especially marketing, it is easy to get upset when others profit off of our hard work. As Brad Geddes illustrates in his latest column at Search Engine Land, the world of search marketing is no exception. Nevertheless, if its happening its because there is room in the marketplace for it to happen, and that implied that it's not really taking money out of anyone's pocket.

Quigo Welcomes Forbes

With highly personalized service for both affiliate and advertisers being offered by such a relatively small-fry, it seems that the biggest adservers may not be the 1st choice for the biggest of advertisers. Indeed, it'll be interesting to see if Google can move quick and far enough to compete with Quigo. Will they up the ante? Costly AdCenter Bug -- MS Fails to Learn

It seems that Microsoft has failed to learn from its respective competitor's mistakes and examples. Then earlier this week a similar glitch at Yahoo was costing advertisers as much as $42,000, but Yahoo! reached out and owed up for its folly. Now, Microsoft's AdCenter is experiencing a similar problem, and they seem to be being impersonally cold about it. As Search Engine Round Table reports:

PPC Growth = Click Fraud

As any industry grows into its own, it obviously becomes more competitive. At first, things are uncertain, and few are willing to commit their resources to competing. But as things shape up, and it become clear what works and doesn't work (not to mention that the industry as a whole does), the invisible hand starts pulling more an more resources into that market.

Google Checkout Lets e-Comms Down

Well, it looks like Google's attempt to promote their Checkout by promoting the e-comms that offer it has backfired, and the e-comms are the ones that are taking the hit. Basically, Google
