SEO-Mania or “Less is More”

SEO ManiaI’d like to share a few thoughts about search engine optimization and all the enthusiasm regarding this matter that I consider excessive. Many SEO aspects and spam techniques share the same traits. If you are a beginner, you have to be utterly careful with optimizing your web sites because a single error may result in having them penalized or even banned. Even if you are quite experienced with SEO, you can never predict how search engines’ algorithms will look like tomorrow, next week or in a few moths. This is the reason why some webmasters say that the best optimization is no optimization at all.

Search Me Changes the SEO Balance

logo_searchme.jpg We are all of us blinded by Google, the set standard for the online search industry. So when new developments occur outside the Google-sphere, my interests start getting piqued. I have recently come across a new search engine called Search Me – an innovative web resource that, while not up and running yet, has unveiled the main principle it will operates on – visual fluidity and relevancy by niche.

10 SEO Survival Tips

top-ten-logo.jpgTop-ten lists, especially in the realm of SEO, are a dime a dozen. After all, they're easy to digest and, therefore, make great link bait (an SEO perk in and of itself. However, bloggers and SEOers rarely cover the business side of things. That is, they scarcely offer any tips on how to actually run an SEO consultancy. Well, writing for Search Engine Journal, Miles Price has a list of 10 Survival Tips to Making it in the SEO Community. The underlying emphasis seems to be on personal branding, and in that respect, these are tips that can applied by practitioners of any online marketing niche. These ten tips are enumerated below in bold, with my own two cents deposited a normal font weight.

SEO and PPC Contests: Should You Enter?

Well, it looks like it's that time of year again. TopSEOs.com is holding it's annual Commitment to Excellence competition where PPC and SEO agencies can prove that their worth their salt. However, the greatest advantage to participating seems to be being associated with other entrants. After all, the entry fee is high, and the prize is basically a marketing campaign that you could probably buy for almost the same price as the registration fee. Those considering entering, then, should first consider whether the scale of their firm is something that can benefit from such an exercise in reputation management development. If you're still too small not ready to court the attention of major corporations, it might be more prudent for you to invest that money in a more tailored marketing campaign that is guaranteed (unlike a prize to be won).

5 SEO Non-Worries

Everyone likes to throw around SEO advice because, well, it entices reader to (1) come back and (2) link back to your site. To borrow from Mark Twain, however: the difference between an SEO advice and SEO expertise is the difference between the lightning-bug and the lightning. Well, in this week's Small is Beautiful column over at Search Engine Land, columnist Stoney deGeyter takes a look at the first 5 of 10 common SEO concerns that really aren't worth the stress of of fretting over. Affiliate Traffic: Quality Over Quality

A new, free SEO tool is underscoring how the worlds of affiliate marketing and conventional retail respectively hinge upon diametrically opposed principles. A company called Kwintessential has launched a keyword translation tool. While this tool can greatly increase revenues and traffic for conventional corporate sites, affiliate marketers might want to avoid it. In a word, the multi-lingual traffic that's good for an international brand name will only dilute affiliate webmaster traffic, and possibly compromise their reputation for having targeted traffic.

4 Ways to SEO for Universal Search

The buzz around universal search is growing, and with good cause: it's both simplifying reputation management and changing SEO as we know it. The thing about things that change the status quo is that they tend to represent the future. If universal search is part and parcel of the future of SEO, then, you should probably be thinking about how you're going to prepare for it. Now, the difference between knowing what to do and knowing how to do it is the difference between reporting the news and making the news.Well, universal search has simplified SEO writ large much in the same way that it has reputation management. Here are four steps tolaying the foundation for your universal SEO.

3 SEO Essentials

There are a number of SEO benefits of blogging. They range from structured content to frequently updated content. Part and parcel of blog content, however, is linking, and that means that you are able to generate a slew of internal links with precisely the kind of anchor text you want the corresponding pages to rank for. If you're still doubtful, watch the video below and note how Rand Fishkin of SEOmoz emphasizes the three following SEO points:
  • Power of Internal Link Juice
  • Power of Trusted Domains
  • Power of Internal Anchor Text
  • Granted, Rand is talkign about wiki-jacking, but first and third point are both available to you through blogging alone. Besides, a few of the SEO benefits of blogging are linkbaiting, link building, and link exchanging. This means that even if you don't manage to become an authority site yourself, the long-tail of blogging makes it all that much more likely that you'll get linked by one sooner or later.

How Google Maps Can Effect SEO, Local Search, and Reputation Management

It looks like Google is going to make using Google Maps as easy embedding a YouTube video. Granted, the API is already open, but now any Joe-blogger and his dog is going to be able to do it. There's a likelihood, moreover, that this is going to somewhat effect the worlds of both SEO and reputation management. On the one hand, webmasters and bloggers that place the maps on their page might gain some SEO out of the deal. On the other hand, especially given the proliferation of local search and the advent of universal search, businesses that share any address that an embedded map is being generated by might be interested in the content on the page on which that map is being featured.

One of the things that's all too prevalent with the advent of Web 2.0 is that a lot of webmasters have abandoned a lot of the ol' fashioned online promotions techniques. Case in point: the SEO benefits of blogging have quickly eclipsed submitting directories in the SEO popularity contest. Granted, Web 2.0 is drastically changing the way that information is disseminated on the web, but web pages are still web pages. What this means is that Web 2.0 has created a slew of new opportunities to promote and market your site, but that doesn't mean that the older opportunities have been pushed out.

    Social SEO: ReviewBack.com

A little while ago, you might have noticed that I reviewed a blog in a way that differed from my usual reviews. As I mentioned then, the impetus came from a new service called ReviewBack.com. The site is a kind of SEO-social-network where bloggers bloggers can find similar blogs with whom to exchange reviews and, consequently, links. The end result is that bloggers get (1) exposed to another readership that is interested in their niche topic, (2) some free link juice which is great for SEO purposes, and most importantly (3) access to a roster of blogger who are actually in the same league as themselves and who are, therefore, more likely to respond to their requests.

Of course, to enjoy these blogging benefits, your blog should be updated daily (or at least five days a week), but if you practice and preach that Content is King, then you should have no trouble adding a blog to your daily diet of webmastering. Essentially, a properly run blog has a number of features that can be exploited for the purposes of viral marketing, social networking, and building defensible traffic.

Right now, the province of Quebec is gearing up for a provincial election. Last week, the Quebec Liberal Party was bidding between 8 and 47 cents per click on their candidates names. Well, it turns out that over the weekend, they took it up a notch...

    SEOing an Odd Domain

When it comes to SEO, there is so much to consider, and opinions will differ widely on what aspect is the most important: page content, URL, domain, etc. A recent post over at My Affiliate Journey has just emphasized how there are so many sides to SEO, that comparing it to a coin doesn't quite work.

    Building Authority Links

An integral part of SEO is link building. Of course, as Jim Boykin reminded us the other day, not all links are created equal. Essentially, a few authority links are worth a lot more than a slew of junk links, and the former usually come from .gov or .edu sites.

    Newspaper Headlines Being SEO'd

It would seem that the tertiary publishing business is finally trying to catch up to the internet by adapting their headlines for search engines. One of the main side-effects, moreover, is that the effort is decreasing the amount of stylistic nuance being that newspapers have traditionally used in headlines. As the New York Times reports:
